About BMAT

Test structure (reference)

  • Section 1 — Aptitude & Skills: 35 questions, 60 minutes (problem-solving, data analysis, critical thinking)
  • Section 2 — Scientific Knowledge: 27 questions, 30 minutes (A-level Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths)
  • Section 3 — Writing Task: 1 essay question from a choice of 3, 30 minutes

Scoring (reference)

  • Sections 1 & 2: scored 1.0–9.0 (5.0 = average candidate performance).
  • Section 3: marked A–E for quality and on a 0–5 scale for written English.
  • Each university used BMAT scores differently — some required all three sections.

Preparation tips (applicable to similar tests)

  • Science revision: A-level content is the core — gaps here directly affect your score.
  • Aptitude practice: logical and spatial reasoning improve with focused repetition.
  • Essay section: structure matters more than length — practise 30-minute timed essays.
