Scoring

  • Each section scored 118–132; total score 472–528 (midpoint = 500).
  • Median applicant score to MD programmes: ~511; median matriculant: ~512.
  • A score of 515+ is considered very competitive at top programmes.
  • CARS cannot be substituted and is particularly weighted for some schools.

Preparation strategy

  • Average prep time for competitive scorers: 3–6 months, 200–400+ hours.
  • Use AAMC official materials (practice exams, Question Packs) as your baseline.
  • CARS: read dense, complex prose daily — no shortcut here.
  • Biochemistry is the single highest-yield topic across multiple sections.
  • End your prep with 3–5 full-length timed practice exams.
  • Spaced repetition (Anki) is highly effective for the science content.

Key dates

  • Seats available from January to September (approximately 30 test dates per year)
  • Registration opens approximately 2 months before each test date
  • Most applicants test in spring (March–May) ahead of the June–October primary application window
  • Scores released approximately 30–35 days after the test
